TEASER

FADE IN:

EXT. INDUSTRIAL NEIGHBORHOOD - DETROIT, MICHIGAN - NIGHT

An American sedan makes its way through the area, no other cars in sight. Poorly-lit streets, drab gray buildings, few traffic lights and no foot traffic accentuate the neighborhood.

INT. SEDAN - CONTINUOUS

TESSA HARPER, an attractive black woman, 32-years-old, drives. AVARY HARPER, her white, 34-year-old husband, sits beside her as their 6-year-old daughter LILY plays with her dolly in the backseat.

AVARY

Honey, are you sure you know where we're going?

TESSA

I mapped it out before we left, so you wouldn't be forced

to stop and ask directions.

AVARY

Heaven forbid you allow me to emasculate myself in front

of total strangers. For the love of Mike!

Tessa throws him a look and as he smiles at her, she gives him a tongue raspberry.

LILY

Daddy, why do you always say that?

AVARY

(turns to face her)

Say what, sweetie?

LILY

That!

AVARY

What's "that"?

LILY

You know, that thing you always say.

AVARY

What?

LILY

(dramatic sigh)

"For the love of Mike!"

AVARY

You love a guy named Mike? Does he know about this?

LILY

Daddy!

They both burst into giggles, Tessa smiling at the wheel.

As they pass a street corner, a dark Chevy Rambler comes tearing out of the intersection and tailgates the sedan, flahsing its high beams.

The Rambler suddenly falls back a few yards, then roars past them on the left, tinted windows obscuring the occupants. Once in front of them, the Chevy slams on its brakes. Then it speeds up.

AVARY

(calming)

Just slow down, Tessa. They're kids, goofing around.

The car in front of them starts and stops in jerks and spurts. Slams on them again. Tessa slams on her brakes, but too late to stop from smashing into the back of the Chevy.

All the doors of the Chevy open as teenage KIDS, faces covered in baseball caps and shadows, approach the car.

TESSA

Avary, what are they doing?

AVARY

Tessa, start the car up.

Tessa turns the key, but the car doesn't turn over.

TESSA

I'm trying, but it's not...

AVARY

(to Lily)

Lily, sweetie, keep your seatbelt on.

He checks the doors to make sure they're locked.

LILY

Daddy, what's happening?

TESSA

Everything's going to be all right, baby.

Suddenly, Tessa's driver-side window is smashed in. She screams, then Lily bursts into tears. The passenger-side window shatters, spilling glass all over Avary.

The car begins to rock back and forth.

EXT. STREET - CONTINUOUS

The CAMERA PANS UPWARD from the hood of the sedan. Still covered in shadows, the teenagers rock the car back and forth. A backseat door is flung open and as we PAN HIGHER the SOUND of two GUNSHOTS goes off as the WHITE LIGHT from the explosion fills the frame.

FADE OUT
